Ginger Jack Julep
As an official Jack Daniels Squire I'm proud owner of one square inch of land in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Naturally, this means I have a preference for complicated drinks using Jack Daniels.
The heat of summer can be cooled off with a Jack Daniels twist to a popular southern drink, the Mint Julep. This is my favorite recipe, which introduces you to the art of infusion. The first part of making a Ginger Jack Julep takes a couple of days preparation, but the effort is worth it.
Ginger Jack Infusion and Julep
2 hands ginger, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 bottle (750 ml) Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey
Combine ginger and Jack Daniel's in a large jar. Store in a cool, dark place for 2 to 3 days. Strain and discard the ginger. Enjoy on the rocks or in your favorite cocktail.
Now you're ready to make some real juleps
Ginger Jack Julep
2 to 3 parts Ginger Jack Infusion
1 part simple syrup
Lime wedge
Fresh mint sprigs
Combine Ginger Jack Infusion and simple syrup in a rocks glass packed with crushed ice. Garnish with lime and mint.
Simple Sugar Syrup Recipe Sugar syrup is easy to make and a must for any in-home cocktail loune. You can make this in batches then keep in the refrigerator and use as needed. For a thick syrup use equal parts water and sugar and cook over a low heat until clear. Bring to a boil for one or two minutes. Cool and place in a container. Suggested initial batch is one cup sugar and one cup water.
